Our lab finished reading and discussing a great introductory book on phylogenetics -- "Tree Thinking: an Introduction to Phylogenetic Biology" (Baum & Smith). Over the past year, we've gone through the chapters of the book for our lab meeting occasional reading. It was a good way to get everyone on the same page with basics of phylogenetics, hypothesis-testing, and comparative analyses. We appreciated the self-quizzes at the end of every chapter, too.

Last up for this year's lab final meeting was the short article "Jerry's Botfly" by Forsyth. I recently uncovered a paper copy of the article that I've had since my entomology class in college (thanks, Dr. Bloch Qazi!).
The article was originally in "Insect Lives: Stories of Mystery & Romance from a Hidden World" edited by Hoyt and Schultz, but it's been also been published as "Jerry's Maggot". The maggot owner is the renowned biologist Jerry Coyne. A classic read!
